Cleft lip and palate is condition where their openings or splits within the lip and roof of the mouth. These are common birth conditions occur alone or as a part of a genetic condition or syndrome.
Symptoms include difficulty speaking and feeding, mouth breathing, nasal congestion, snoring, deafness cause psychological impact on child.
Treatment involves multidisciplinary team of plastic/cosmetic surgeon , otolaryngologist, pediatrician, dentists, orthodontists and speech therapists to supply an entire standardized treatment for cleft lip and palate.

Treatment protocols for cleft(split)lip and palate
3-6 months aged – Lip repair
Needs just one day hospital stay . Babies can immediately breast feed after the surgery if there’s no palatal issues.
9-12months aged – Palate repair
Needs 1-2 days of hospitalization. it’s a critical operation for the event of normal speech of the kid. Most frequently babies also need ventilation tube insertion into their ears by an ENT surgeon at an equivalent time because most babies with birth defect have a dysfunctional Eustachian tube and may have fluid accumulation within the ears.
1-12 years aged – therapy & surgery
All children undergo therapy after the palate operation. They also undergo periodic speech assessment along side nasoendoscopy and if required also undergo secondary speech surgery like Pharyngoplasty or Furlow’s Z plasty to enhance speech
7-11 years aged
Alveolar bone grafting with pre and post orthodontics
Bone from the hip is transferred to the upper jawbone depending upon the time of eruption of the canine . The orthodontist usually prepares the jaw for this surgery and also perform some finishing touches after surgery.
16-18 years aged
Jaw surgery with pre and post orthodontics
Orthognathic surgery to correct ‘Flat face deformity’, medically referred to as Midface hypoplasia. this is often within the sort of Lefort I maxillary advancement or sometimes Double jaw surgery. this is often a long surgery requiring 3-4 days of hospital stay including 1 day of ICU stay. during this operation the upper jawbone is advanced ahead to offer the patient a correct bite and better aesthetics. Sometimes it’s going to also require movements of the mandible .
After 18 years
Rhinoplasty with or without lip revisions Rhinoplasty is an operation to correct the nasal deformities of cleft lip and palate. During this point , any adjustments needed to the lip can also be performed.
