Breast Augmentation
Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation, also called augmentation mammoplasty, is surgery to enlarge and increase
the projection of the breast so that it is in proportion to the body. There are two ways of breast
augmentation:
Implant augmentation– In this implant is put under breast. Implants are available in different shapes and sizes. The shell of the implant is formed of a silicone-based material, and implants are filled with gel or water. Before the procedure, you and your surgeon will choose the sort of implant and therefore the new size and
shape of your breasts.
Fat grafting – In this fat is taken from another part of your body and injected into breast. The
advantage of this is that patients own tissue is used and patient can get rid of excess fat from
body. This is done usually when smaller augmentation is required.

What happens during the procedure?
Patient will be given a medicine to fall asleep (general anesthetic) and patient may also be given a medicine to relax (sedative).
An incision will be made in each breast. The incision may be made near your nipple, in the crease beneath your breast.
Tissue inside your breasts may be moved away from your chest muscles, the implants may be
placed below breast tissue (sub-glandular) or below the chest muscles (sub-muscular).
Your incisions will be closed with stitches (sutures) and covered with surgical tape. Your
breasts are going to be covered with gauze and elastic bandages (dressings).
The procedure may vary among doctors and hospitals.
What are the risks?
Generally, this is a safe procedure. However, problems may occur and are temporary including:
- Infection,
- Bleeding (hematoma).
- Partial or total numbness in the nipple or breasts feeling, it returns in sometime.
Breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). This is a kind of cancer which will develop after breast implants. This is rare.
How will be the recovery after procedure?
Breast Augmentation is usually a day care procedure You can start your daily routine work from next
day after the surgery and can go for a walk, etc.
You will be able to return to work 3 days post-op if you are on desk top job. You must avoid
knocks/jerks, sudden movements when driving, lifting weights, etc., for approximately 3 weeks.
Do not wear any bra for about 3 weeks after the surgery since it may change the result obtained.
By a month, bruising, discomfort and most swelling will disappear and you will be back to normal.
And by 6-8 weeks, you’ll begin all kinds of physical activities, but only after the consulting your surgeon before you undertake any heavy activity.
The breasts will continue to settle into their final position over the course of the next few weeks to months.
